🍇 Nielluccio

Grape variety ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 2

The main red grape of Corsica; genetically the same as Sangiovese.

Nielluccio is the main red grape of Corsica, an island in the Mediterranean. Genetically it is the same as Sangiovese, Italy's chief grape, and was apparently brought to the island from Italy many centuries ago. In Corsica it is grown under its own name, and the wines have their own character.

The grape likes a warm climate and sunny slopes with poor soil. Red wines with notes of red berries, herbs and spice are made from it, as well as rosés. Nielluccio is the base of the Patrimonio appellation in the north of the island. It is also grown around Ajaccio and in other zones, where the wine is called Vin de Corse.

Corsica belongs to France, but in spirit and in grape varieties it is close to Italy. This link is visible in the name of the grape and in the style of the wines. Rosés from Nielluccio are especially popular in summer: light, fresh and aromatic. The reds go well with grilled meat and local cured sausages.
