📜 Ajaccio
Wines from the granite hills around Ajaccio in western Corsica, above all from the Sciaccarello grape.
Ajaccio is a wine appellation of the granite hills around the town of Ajaccio in western Corsica, France. Ajaccio is the birthplace of Napoleon. The vineyards lie on slopes not far from the sea, on granite and sandy soils, with a warm sunny climate and sea winds.
The main grape here is the local Sciaccarello, a red grape that is rare outside the island. Nielluccio, Grenache and Vermentino are added to it. The reds are light and aromatic, with notes of red berries, pepper and herbs. The rosés are fresh and dry. The whites from Vermentino are light, with citrus and flowers. All the wines are still.
The Ajaccio name is protected as a PDO. It is one of the small wine areas of France, where wine is made mostly for locals and tourists. It goes well with Corsican food: cured meats, goat cheese and fish. Corsica is part of France, but has its own culture and its own grapes. The wines of Ajaccio are a fine example of this individuality.
