🍇 Sciaccarello
A red wine grape of Corsica, grown around Ajaccio.
Sciaccarello is a red wine grape of Corsica. It grows mainly around the town of Ajaccio, in the south-west of the island. The variety is local and long established: Corsica was ruled by Genoa for a long time, and many of its grapes are related to Italian ones.
Sciaccarello gives pale wine with a spicy, peppery aroma, light body and moderate strength. It can be red or rosé; the island's rosé is especially valued. The berries ripen late, so a warm autumn is needed. The variety likes the granite soils of Ajaccio.
Sciaccarello is in the list of grape varieties. It is linked by ancestry to Italian varieties: Boggione Rosso, Uva delle Vecchie, Malvasia Bianca, Moscato Violetto, and also to Caloria, Rollo and Pollera Nera. Wines from it are sold as "Ajaccio" or "Vin de Corse". The variety shows that Corsica developed its own winemaking tradition, unlike mainland France. Such wines are served with fish, snacks and Mediterranean cuisine.
