π Sangiovese
The main red grape of Tuscany, the base of Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino.
Sangiovese is the main red grape of Italy and Tuscany. Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano are made from it. The name is thought to come from the Latin for "blood of Jupiter".
The grape grows in Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, Umbria and the Marche, and also in Corsica, where it is called Nielluccio. It likes sunny limestone and clay slopes. The wine is ruby, with the aroma of cherry, red plum, herbs and tea, bright acidity and noticeable tannin. So it goes well with food: tomatoes, pasta, meat.
There are many styles: from light Chianti for young drinking to powerful Brunello that is aged for years. RosΓ© is also made from Sangiovese.
The grape is related to other Italian varieties: Nerello Mascalese, Ciliegiolo and Gaglioppo. Sangiovese is the most widely planted grape of the country.
