📜 Patrimonio
Corsica's oldest appellation, in the north of the island, known for red wines from Nielluccio.
Patrimonio is the oldest appellation of Corsica, a French island in the Mediterranean. It lies in the north of the island, near Saint-Florent. The name is protected as a PDO. Red, white and rosé wines are made here, all still.
The main red grape is Nielluccio. It is close to Italy's Sangiovese and gives wines with notes of red berries, herbs and spice, with good acidity. The main white grape is Vermentino, known in Corsica also as Rolle. White wines are fresh and aromatic, with citrus and herbal notes.
The Patrimonio area lies on hillsides by the sea. The soils are limestone and clay, and the sea nearby softens the climate. Mountains shelter the vineyards from cold winds. The island is famous for sun, and the wine takes in its warmth.
Patrimonio is one of those places where local grapes and traditions survive. Many wineries are small and family-run. The wines suit fish, seafood and Mediterranean cooking. It is one of the most notable wine districts of Corsica.
