🥃 Miyagikyo Single Malt
Single malt Japanese whisky from Nikka's Miyagikyo distillery near Sendai (1969): stills heated by steam, soft floral style; 45% ABV.
Miyagikyo Single Malt is a single malt Japanese whisky from Nikka, made at the Miyagikyo distillery, which opened in 1969 in a wooded valley near Sendai. The producer describes it as a soft, refined whisky with a floral aroma and fruity sweetness. Its strength is 45% ABV, and there is no age statement.
Unlike at Yoichi, the stills here are heated indirectly, with steam, up to about 130 °C. The stills have a bulge in the lower neck, and the lyne arm rises upward, so lighter vapours reach the condenser. The Whiskey Shelf writes that the whisky matures in bourbon barrels and partly in sherry casks. Whisky Advocate (2016) reviewed the version without an age statement.
Why this matters to you. This is the opposite of Yoichi Single Malt: there is no noticeable peat or smoke. Compare them side by side to see how the heating of the stills and the climate change the taste. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe amount of alcohol.
