π Vermentino
A Mediterranean white grape making fresh, fragrant wines in Sardinia and Liguria.
Vermentino is a white wine grape of the Mediterranean. It is grown in Sardinia, Liguria, Tuscany, Corsica and Provence. In France, in Provence, it is called Rolle.
Vermentino wines are fresh and aromatic. They show citrus, green apple, herbs and a light bitterness, sometimes a salty sea note. Acidity is medium and the wine is dry. It is drunk young and chilled.
The grape likes a warm coast and tolerates wind and heat well. Known wines come from Sardinia (Gallura, Cagliari, Colli del Limbara), Liguria (Riviera di Ponente, Cinque Terre), Tuscany (Bolgheri, Capalbio) and Corsica (Ajaccio). In Provence it goes into CΓ΄tes de Provence wines.
Vermentino is a typical wine for fish and seafood and for pasta with pesto. It is related to a number of Mediterranean varieties, but today it is known and valued in its own right.
