Penderyn Sherrywood is a single malt whisky from the Welsh brand Penderyn, from the Gold series. It differs from the classic Penderyn Madeira Finish by a finish in Oloroso sherry casks, not Madeira. The strength is 46% vol.; the age is not stated on the label. It is one of the brand's permanent expressions.
According to the producer, the spirit from a Faraday-type still first matures in bourbon casks and then gets a finish in Oloroso casks, a dry sherry with oxidative ageing. An independent review adds that the bourbon casks come from the Buffalo Trace distillery. As a Welsh single malt, it matures for at least three years.
Why this matters to you. The sherry cask adds dark dried fruit, iris and nuts, so Sherrywood is sweeter and denser than Madeira Finish but lighter than Penderyn Portwood. If you like whisky with a sherry finish, start with this one and compare it with Madeira Finish. WHO reminds: there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
