Kir
How to make it at home: Kir — ingredients, steps, safety tips.
Time: 1 minute · Yield: 1 serving
Ingredients
- 90 ml dry white wine
- 10 ml crème de cassis (blackcurrant liqueur)
Method
- Chill the wine: most white wines are served at 4–10 °C.
- Pour the crème de cassis into a glass.
- Top up with the white wine.
- For a Kir Royal, use Champagne instead of white wine.
Tips
- In the EU only a blackcurrant liqueur with more than 400 g of sugars per litre may be called crème de cassis.
- In 1979 the EU Court of Justice ruled in the “Cassis de Dijon” case that Germany could not keep out this liqueur (15–20 % alcohol) merely because of its own 25 % minimum for fruit liqueurs.
- Kir is not heated, so all the alcohol from the wine and liqueur remains.
