🍇 Aligoté
A white grape from Burgundy giving fresh, crisp wines, widely grown in Moldova and Ukraine.
Aligoté is a white grape from Burgundy, France. It is a cross of Pinot and Gouais Blanc, the parent of many European vines. Aligoté grows next to Chardonnay but is given less favoured sites.
The wine is pale and light, with high acidity and citrus and apple notes. It is drunk young and chilled. In Burgundy it is bottled as Bourgogne Aligoté, and the village of Bouzeron has its own name for wine from this grape. It is also used for sparkling Crémant de Bourgogne and for the classic aperitif kir, where the wine is mixed with blackcurrant liqueur.
Aligoté is widely planted outside Burgundy, in Moldova, southern Ukraine and other parts of Eastern Europe. In Ukraine it is grown in the Odesa, Mykolaiv, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions and in Crimea.
Aligoté often goes into light whites and sparkling wines. It is valued for freshness and an affordable price.
