🥃 Scotch Whisky Association (industry body)

Concept ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 5 Updated:

Trade association of Scotch whisky producers with offices in Edinburgh and London; over 90 member companies; history dating back to 1912.

The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) is the trade body of Scotch whisky producers, headquartered in Edinburgh with an office in London. According to the association, its more than 90 member companies, from global groups to family and new distilleries, together produce about 95% of the Scotch whisky sold worldwide.

History. According to Whisky Magazine, the organisation traces its roots to the Wine & Spirit Brand Association, founded by brand owners in October 1912 after tax increases. In 1917 it was renamed the Whisky Association, and in 1940 it received its current name.

What it does. The association represents the industry before the governments of the United Kingdom, Scotland and other countries, collects statistics, and advises members on labelling and HMRC tax requirements. According to WIPO Magazine 2023, its legal department has five lawyers and two assistants who act against counterfeits and imitations.

Protecting the name. The law defines what may be called Scotch whisky: the Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009 require distillation and maturation in Scotland, oak casks, at least 3 years and 40% ABV. The name Scotch Whisky is registered as a geographical indication in more than 70 countries, and in some places as a certification or collective trade mark.

Why it matters to you. The SWA is neither a government body nor a quality mark: the law sets the requirements, while the association watches over the name and represents producers’ interests. So its statements are the industry’s position, not an independent assessment. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe dose of alcohol.
