🍷 Single Quinta Vintage Port
Vintage Port from a single estate, often in years when no general vintage is declared.
Single Quinta is a vintage port from one estate. Quinta in Portuguese means an estate or farm. Ordinary vintage port is blended from grapes of different estates, while here all the grapes come from one quinta.
Port is made in the Douro valley, in northern Portugal. Wine spirit is added to the fermenting wine, and sugar stays in it. Then the wine is aged in barrels, and true vintage port also in bottle. Such port is laid down for long ageing and opened many years later.
Why is Single Quinta special? Producers declare a general vintage only in the best years. In other years they often release a wine from one quinta. So a Single Quinta often appears in years when a general vintage is not declared. It is a way to show the character of an individual estate.
The status of port is overseen by the Douro and Port Wine Institute (IVDP). Single Quinta is close to vintage port but differs in the origin of the grapes. As with any alcohol, it should be drunk in moderation.
