🍷 Crusted Port

Unfiltered Port blended from several years that throws a sediment in the bottle.

Crusted Port is a type of Port. It is made from a blend of wines from different years and is not filtered before bottling. As a result a deposit forms in the bottle over time. The word "crusted" refers to the crust of sediment on the inside of the bottle.

The blend is aged in barrels for a time, then bottled. After that the wine must rest in the bottle for at least three years before it is sold. During this time it develops and gains depth. In style it is called "a poor man's vintage Port", since it resembles vintage Port but costs noticeably less: it is a blend, not wine of a single year.

Vintage Port is a related wine, but made from the harvest of one especially good year only. Crusted Port belongs to Port and to Portuguese wine. Before serving, the bottle should be decanted carefully to separate the sediment. It is served in small portions, with cheese and nuts.
