🍷 Terrantez
A very rare Madeira from the almost vanished Terrantez grape.
Terrantez is a very rare Madeira, made from the almost vanished Terrantez grape. Madeira is a fortified wine from the Portuguese island of Madeira. Vineyards of the grape survive only on a few small plots. The grape nearly disappeared in the 19th century, when pests and vine diseases reached the island. Vines were then replanted with other, hardier varieties, and Terrantez made up only a small part of the plantings. As a result old wines from it are valued very highly and there are practically no new ones. Terrantez gives Madeira in a style from medium-dry to medium-sweet, with fresh acidity and notes of citrus, honey, nuts and spice. Like all Madeira, the wine is matured by heating and oxidation, so it hardly spoils after the bottle is opened and can stand for decades. It is one of the "noble" Madeiras, the grapes from which the island's best wines are made. It belongs to Portuguese wine and to Madeira as a wider group.
