Wine region โœ” Checked: 10.2026 ยท sources: 5 Updated:

The chalk and greensand of Kent and Sussex, the heart of English sparkling wine.

South East England is a part of the country where the same chalk layers lie underground as in Champagne in France. The main wine counties are Kent, Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire. The status of the region is unofficial: it is simply a convenient name for an area.

The land here is known for chalk and greensand. Chalk holds moisture and warmth well, and the climate is cool but with mild winters thanks to the sea. For grapes this suits sparkling wines in particular. The heart of English sparkling wine lies here.

The same three grapes as in Champagne are grown: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. They make sparkling wine by the traditional method, and such wines often win awards at international competitions. Still wines are made as well.

South East England is part of England. The well-known estates of Sussex and Kent are here, and the wines of the English region are quickly gaining fame. Each year the crop depends on the weather.
