🍇 Pinot Meunier
A red grape, a mutation of Pinot Noir; one of the three main Champagne grapes.
Pinot Meunier is a red grape, a mutation of Pinot Noir. That means it arose from Pinot Noir by itself, as a change in the vine, and differs from it by leaves with a white down. The French name means "miller": the down on the leaves looks like flour dust.
The grape is one of the three main varieties of Champagne, with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. It is especially popular in the Marne Valley. It ripens early and resists spring frosts, so it suits cold places well. Its wine is fruity and soft, which makes a Champagne blend approachable earlier.
Besides Champagne it is grown in England, in Sussex and Hampshire, where it goes into sparkling wine. It also exists in Germany, in Württemberg, in Trento in Italy and in the Loire. It is often used in blanc de noirs.
The grape belongs to French wine and to the general list of grape varieties.
