π Refosco
A red grape from north-eastern Italy, also grown in Slovenia and Croatia.
Refosco is a red grape from north-eastern Italy. It is more a family of related varieties than a single one. It grows in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, and also in Slovenia and Croatia. The berries are dark with thick skins, and the vine is hardy.
Refosco wine is dark, with an aroma of blackberry, plum and herbs, good acidity and firm tannins. It is made in the Colli Orientali del Friuli, Friuli Grave and Lison-Pramaggiore areas. In the Slovenian Karst a close variety is called Teran, in Italian Terrano. These names are linked to a more acidic, darker wine. The wine suits meat, charcuterie and cheese, and local cooking best.
Refosco is known under several local names, among them Terrano. It belongs to Italian wine and to the grapes of Friuli. It is usually drunk young, though the best examples age longer. The grape is interesting because it shows the diversity of vines in the border areas of Italy, Slovenia and Croatia.
