A large area north of the capital.

Torres Vedras is a wine zone in western Portugal, north of Lisbon and not far from the Atlantic, around the town of Torres Vedras. It is part of the Lisbon region. The zone covers hilly land between the coast and the inland hills.

The climate is mild with ocean influence: cool winds and humidity, but enough sun. Soils are clay and limestone. A lot of wine used to be made here for the mass market, but today producers increasingly focus on quality.

The main red grape is Castelão, the main white Arinto. Castelão gives light, fruity reds that go well with grilled meat. Arinto makes fresh whites with crisp acidity and a citrus note. Rosés are also made.

For visitors to Lisbon the zone is convenient: a short trip from the capital leads to wineries and local restaurants. The neighbouring zones of Alenquer and Óbidos also belong to the Lisbon region. Portuguese grilled and fried fish dishes go well with the light reds and fresh whites of the area. Wines of this zone are generally inexpensive and meant for the everyday table. They suit anyone who wants to try Portuguese grapes without spending much.
