🍇 Castelão
A red wine grape widely grown in southern Portugal.
Castelão is a red grape widely grown in southern Portugal. It has grown in the country for a long time and is counted among its most planted red varieties. It grows on sandy soils in a warm climate and tolerates heat well.
The main areas are the Setúbal Peninsula, Palmela, Lisbon, Tejo and Alenquer, and also Encostas d'Aire. The wines vary widely. Young, light wines with red berry and herbal notes are drunk chilled. More serious wines, after ageing, gain hints of black fruit and spice. Castelão is often blended with other grapes. Rosé is made from it as well.
Castelão is related to other Portuguese varieties, for example Caetana Branca and Alfrocheiro. It belongs to Portuguese wine and to grape varieties. For getting to know southern Portugal it is a typical and inexpensive choice, and goes well with stewed meat, charcuterie and cheese.
