📜 Vernaccia di San Gimignano
A Vernaccia white around San Gimignano, the medieval town of towers.
Vernaccia di San Gimignano is a white wine from the Vernaccia grape, made around the medieval town of towers San Gimignano in Tuscany, Italy. The town stands on a hill and is known for its stone towers, built by wealthy families in the Middle Ages. It is on the World Heritage list.
This wine was the first in Italy to receive DOC status, in 1966, and later DOCG. Today it is protected as a PDO. The wine is pale, dry and fresh, with notes of flowers, citrus and apple, and a light almond bitterness on the finish. The soils here are sandy and clayey, with shells left from an ancient sea. Aged riserva versions are deeper and richer.
Vernaccia di San Gimignano is a still white wine of Tuscany, a land more often remembered for its reds. The wine pairs well with fish, vegetables, starters and light pasta. It is served chilled. For visitors to the town it has long been a calling card, like the towers themselves. Interestingly, the word vernaccia in Italy refers to several different grapes.
