🏷️ Vino (Italy)
The simplest Italian wine category, with no region named.
Vino da tavola is the simplest Italian wine category, with no area stated. The words mean table wine. The label shows no region, vintage or grape. It is ordinary wine for everyday drinking.
The history of the category is interesting. Before the modern appellation system, Italy had only such simple wines. Stricter categories appeared later: IGT (typical geographical indication), DOC and DOCG. Vino da tavola remained the lowest level. However, it sometimes happened that top producers released wines under this label because their wines did not fit the rules. That is how the Super Tuscans appeared.
In 2010 the system was revised, and now the label simply says Vino instead of vino da tavola. The category belongs to Italian wine, which is often made from grapes of different regions. It is wine without a geographical indication: the place it comes from cannot be named, and the buyer judges it by price and producer.
