🏷️ IGT

Wine classification ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 6

An Italian regional wine category with flexible rules.

IGT is an Italian category of regional wine. It stands for Indicazione Geografica Tipica, "typical geographical indication". In the EU it corresponds to the protected geographical indication (PGI). The rules are looser than for DOC and DOCG: more grapes may be used, with fewer restrictions.

IGT appeared in Italy in the 1990s. It sits between simple table wines and DOC wine. It names a broad area such as Tuscany or Veneto. Producers choose IGT when they want to make a wine to their own recipe that does not fit strict rules. That is how the "Super Tuscans" appeared: bold wines with international grapes that became famous but, by the rules, remained in the IGT category.

IGT does not mean "bad wine". There are many excellent bottles among them. The category only shows that the rules are more flexible. Next to it stand DOC Italy and DOCG, with more rules, and vino da tavola, the simplest. The label and the producer's reputation help to learn what is inside.
