🍷 Wine from raisined grapes
An EU category: wine from grapes dried in the sun or shade.
Wine from raisined grapes is a wine category in European Union law. It is wine made from grapes that were dried in the sun or in the shade before pressing. Drying raises the concentration of sugar.
The natural alcohol in such wine must be at least 16%. This means the potential alcohol from the sugar in the grapes reaches that level even without added sugar. The strength in the finished wine can differ: in some types part of the sugar stays and the wine is sweet, in others it ferments to dryness.
Many famous wines belong here: straw wine in different countries, Italian Amarone and Recioto, and Spanish and Greek sweet wines. Drying takes from several weeks to months. It is linked to the term "straw wine", when bunches are laid on straw or mats. EU law singles this category out because the method differs a lot from ordinary winemaking.
