📍 Algarve
The resort south, with small vineyards.
The Algarve is a resort region in southern Portugal on the Atlantic Ocean, with beaches and rocky bays. There are fewer vineyards here than in other parts of the country; they are scattered in small plots among orange groves and olive and almond orchards. The climate is warm Mediterranean, with mild winters and hot dry summers, and the ocean wind freshens the air.
The region has four small DOC appellations: Lagoa, Lagos, Portimão and Tavira. They are tied to towns on the coast. In addition there is the regional designation Algarve for wines of the whole area. Red, white and rosé wines are made, mostly for local restaurants and visitors.
An old local red grape is Negra Mole, giving soft wines with moderate tannins. Syrah, Castelão and Touriga Nacional also grow here, and among whites Arinto. Newer winemakers bring modern methods and make fresher wines.
For comparison with its neighbours: to the north, beyond the hills, lies Alentejo with wide plains and larger production, and to the east the Spanish border and Andalusia.
