📜 Alsace Grand Cru Schlossberg
The first recognised grand cru of Alsace, a granite slope near Kientzheim known for Riesling.
Alsace Grand Cru Schlossberg is the first recognised grand cru of Alsace. It is a steep slope near the village of Kientzheim in the Haut-Rhin, in eastern France. The name is protected as a geographical indication of the European Union and is listed in the eAmbrosia register.
The main feature of the place is its granite soil. Granite warms up quickly and gives heat back well, and the slope faces the sun. As a result the grapes ripen fully, while the wines keep fresh acidity. Schlossberg is known above all for Riesling, which is fine here, with a mineral touch.
Mostly the wines are white and still, meaning without bubbles. Among other grapes, Gewürztraminer and Pinot Gris are allowed. Sweet wines are made too, when the grapes are picked very late.
Grand cru in Alsace means separate vineyards recognised as the best. Schlossberg was the first to get this status, so it is often given as an example of an Alsace grand cru.
