🥃 American Malt Whisky
US whisky type under the federal standard: mash of at least 51% malted barley, distilled to up to 80% ABV, aged in new charred oak barrels, bottled at 40% ABV or more.
American malt whisky is a US whisky type under the federal standard: a mash of at least 51% malted barley, distilled to up to 80% ABV, aged in new charred oak barrels and bottled at 40% ABV or more. It is not the same as American single malt, which requires 100% malted barley and a single distillery.
Rules. The type is described in Table 1 of 27 CFR § 5.143, alongside bourbon and rye whisky. Spirit is entered into the barrel at no more than 62.5% ABV (125 proof). Neutral spirit is not allowed, while colouring, flavouring and blending materials permitted by the standard may be added. Unqualified "malt" means barley malt; whisky made from rye malt is a separate type, rye malt whisky.
Aging. The standard sets no minimum time for ordinary malt whisky. If the whisky has spent at least two years in new charred barrels, it may be labelled straight malt whisky, and then no additives are allowed. A similar spirit aged in used barrels has a different name: whisky distilled from malt mash.
Difference from single malt. From 19 January 2025, the US has a separate type, American single malt whisky: 100% malted barley, one distillery, oak barrels of up to 700 litres, new or used. TTB ruling T.D. TTB-199 explains that blends made under the malt whisky standard may be labelled American blended malt whisky, but not single malt.
Why this matters to you. The words "malt whisky" on an American bottle mean only a majority of malt in the mash, not 100%. If these requirements matter to you, look for "straight" (at least two years, no additives) or "American single malt". New charred barrels are the same requirement as for bourbon. The WHO reminds us that no level of alcohol consumption is safe.
