📍 Anchialos
A coastal zone near Volos.
Anchialos (Nea Anchialos) is a coastal wine zone in Thessaly, central Greece, near the city of Volos. It is part of Thessaly. The settlement of Nea Anchialos stands on the shore of a gulf, and vineyards lie on hills overlooking the Aegean Sea. The climate is Mediterranean, summers hot but tempered by a sea breeze.
The Anchialos appellation covers dry white wines, mainly from Roditis and Savatiano. Roditis is a pink-skinned grape giving fresh wines with high acidity, while Savatiano is Greece's most widely planted white grape, making soft wines with a light spice. Together they give a light wine with a citrus note.
Anchialos whites go well with fish and seafood served in coastal tavernas. It is a simple, fresh wine that needs no ageing.
The area is small but lies near Mount Pelion, so it is easy to visit on the way. North of the zone lies Thessaly with Larissa, and to the east Mount Pelion, whose slopes grow apple and olive trees. Anchialos white is served chilled with fish and salads, or as an aperitif.
