🍇 Băbească Neagră
An old red grape of Romania and Moldova that gives light red wines.
Băbească Neagră is an old red grape from Romania and Moldova. The name means roughly “black grandmother”. There are several theories about its origin, and the grape is a local one, grown in these lands for a long time. The wine is best drunk within two or three years of the harvest, while it keeps its bright berry notes.
Wine from Băbească Neagră is pale, ruby-coloured, with light tannins and modest strength. The aroma recalls red berries: cherry, raspberry and strawberry, with light hints of spice. It is drunk young, and chilled in summer. It suits meat, poultry and cheese.
Băbească Neagră grows in the Moldavian Hills in Romania, in the Nicorești and Coteşti areas, and in the Republic of Moldova. There are variants too, such as Băbească Gri, with pale berries. Rosé and sparkling wines are also made from Băbească Neagră.
Băbească Neagră belongs to Romanian wine and to Moldovan wine. It is an example of a local grape that remains a symbol of the region. Alcohol is for adults.
