📜 Barbera d'Alba

A red wine from Barbera on the hills around Alba in Piedmont.

Barbera d'Alba is a red wine from the Barbera grape grown on the hills around the town of Alba in Piedmont, north-west Italy. The area is called the Langhe. The famous Barolo and Barbaresco are also made here, but Barbera is a simpler, everyday wine.

Barbera gives a dark wine with high acidity and soft tannins. The aroma recalls cherry, blueberry and plum. The acid makes the wine fresh and good with rich food: pasta, meat, cheese. There are light versions drunk young, and more serious ones aged in oak.

The appellation covers still red wines. On the Langhe hills the best slopes are given to Nebbiolo, while Barbera grows on less favoured but still good sites. Barbera d'Alba is an example of how one area can make wines of different character from different grapes.
