A red grape from Valencia, Spain, the backbone of Utiel-Requena wines.

Bobal is a red grape from Valencia in Spain. It is the base of the wines of Utiel-Requena, where it grows mostly at an altitude of about 700 metres. Bobal is also grown in Manchuela and in other parts of Spain.

Bobal berries are dark, with thick skins and high acidity. Red wines from it are deep, smelling of black berries, violet and plum, with noticeable but soft tannins. Bobal also makes rosé wines: bright, fresh and aromatic. The wine is served with meat, sausages and rice dishes.

For a long time the grape stayed in the shadows and went into bulk wines. Today it is valued again: old vines give concentrated, expressive wines. Bobal is one of the best known Spanish grapes, alongside Tempranillo. Utiel-Requena and Manchuela are the main places to look for it. It is a grape with a long history, and many old vineyards survive to this day.
