EU geographical indication for brandy made from wine of Italian grapes: at least 12 months in oak barrels in warehouses in Italy, sold from 38% ABV.

Brandy italiano is an EU geographical indication for brandy made in Italy from wine of grapes grown and processed in the country. It is aged for at least 12 months in oak barrels in warehouses in Italy and is sold at a strength of at least 38% ABV. The production area is the whole of Italy.

Protected name. Brandy italiano is listed among the EU geographical indications in category 5, "brandies", together with Brandy de Jerez, Brandy del Penedés and the German Deutscher Weinbrand. The technical file was approved by Italian ministerial decree No. 5388 of 1 August 2011; today the name is protected by Regulation (EU) 2019/787.

Production. The base is wine spirit (acquavite di vino), to which wine distillate may be added. Ageing lasts at least 12 months under tax supervision, or at least six months in barrels up to 1,000 l. The barrels must be oak, unpainted and uncoated. The category minimum is 36% ABV, but the brandy is sold from 38%.

Additions. Sugar is allowed up to 20 g/l, and caramel only for colour. Do not confuse brandy with grappa: both are Italian, but grappa is distilled from grape pomace, while Brandy italiano is made from wine. The decree explains the link with the country through a long tradition attested by historical sources.

Why it matters to you. The words Brandy italiano guarantee Italian grapes and at least a year in oak, but they do not state the age more precisely, so check the producer's own designations. WHO reminds us: there is no safe amount of alcohol.
