Grape variety ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 3 Updated:

An old white grape of Romania and Moldova.

Fetească Albă is an old white grape of Romania and Moldova. The name means "girlish" (from the word fată, girl). It is one of the oldest local varieties in these countries.

Fetească Albă wine is light and fresh, with a floral and fruity aroma: flowers, apple, pear, sometimes Muscat notes. Acidity is moderate. It is drunk young, but the grape also suits sweet wines. Linked to it is Fetească Regală, which was born from a cross of Fetească Albă with another variety.

In Romania the grape is grown in Cotnari, Ayud, Sebeș-Apold and Jidvei, and also in Hungary, in Eger, where it is known as Leányka. In Moldova it grows in Codru, Hînceşti, Chișinău, Nisporeni and Călăraşi.

Fetească Albă is important for Romanian and Moldovan wine as a native variety. Both still and sparkling wines are made from it.
