📜 Corbières
A large Languedoc appellation in the hills of the Aude, mostly with rich red wines.
Corbières is a large appellation of Languedoc in France, in the hills of the Aude department. The area lies between the Mediterranean and the Pyrenees, the climate is warm and dry, and winds help keep the vines healthy. The appellation is protected (PDO).
Mostly deep red wines are made here from Carignan, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. They can be warm and spicy, smelling of dark berries, garrigue herbs and spices. Rosé wines and whites are also made, but in smaller amounts. Old Carignan vines give concentrated, expressive wines.
The area is large and varied: hills, valleys and slopes by the sea give different styles. Corbières is often inexpensive while still having character. It suits meat, sausages, cheese and Mediterranean dishes. For those who like red wine from the south of France it is one of the good examples of Languedoc. The name is worth remembering, as it appears on labels quite often.
