Red wines from the schist and limestone hills of Languedoc.

Saint-Chinian is a French wine with a protected name (PDO) from Languedoc, from hills in the Hérault département. The vineyards stand on schist and limestone soils. Summers are hot and dry, and the hills create a difference between day and night temperatures.

Red wines take the main place, but rosé and white are also made under this name. Reds are made from Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Carignan. They are full-bodied, with dark berry, herb and spice aromas. Schist sites give tighter, more mineral wines, limestone sites softer and fruitier ones.

Saint-Chinian is part of Languedoc and belongs to still wines. Such wines are often affordable and go well with meat, charcuterie and cheese. The name comes from the small town of Saint-Chinian. The strength of the red is usually 13–14%. Varieties are often made separately and then blended to reach the right balance of body and freshness.
