📜 Côtes du Roussillon
The main appellation for dry wines of Roussillon by the eastern Pyrenees.
Côtes du Roussillon is the main appellation for dry wines of the Roussillon region in southern France. It lies at the eastern Pyrenees, not far from the Mediterranean. It is warm and sunny, and the summer is dry.
Red, rosé and white wines are made. Reds are most often blended from several grapes: Grenache, Syrah, Carignan and Mourvèdre. Each adds something: Grenache softness and warmth, Syrah colour and pepper, Carignan acidity and structure, Mourvèdre strength.
Old Carignan and Grenache vines on dry slopes give a small crop, so the wine is concentrated. White and rosé wines are light and fresh.
Côtes du Roussillon is a still wine, neither sparkling nor fortified. The sweet fortified wines of Roussillon are sold under separate names. The region itself is part of the French south called Roussillon.
