Red wines from the slopes of the Montagne Noire in Languedoc.

Minervois is an appellation in Languedoc in southern France. The vineyards lie on the slopes of the Black Mountain (Montagne Noire) and on limestone plateaus. The climate is Mediterranean, but cooler near the mountains.

Red wines are the main thing here. They are blended from Syrah, Grenache, Carignan and Mourvèdre. Each adds something: Syrah pepper aroma and colour, Grenache softness, Carignan structure, Mourvèdre strength. Rosé and white wines are also made. The best reds from the village of La Livinière have a separate name.

Old vines on dry slopes give a small crop, so the wine can be concentrated, with aromas of blackberry, herbs and spice. Vineyard altitude varies: cool nights keep freshness.

Minervois is a still wine. In Languedoc it stands next to other appellations of the region: Corbières, Fitou, Saint-Chinian. It shows how southern France offers good wines at affordable prices.
