🍷 Garrafeira Port
A rare single-year port aged for a long time in large glass demijohns.
Garrafeira is a rare style of Port from a single year. Its special feature is unusual ageing: first the wine spends several years in wooden casks, then many years, often decades, in large glass demijohns.
In glass the wine barely breathes. So it develops slowly and differently from a tawny in cask or a Vintage Port in a normal bottle. The taste is complex, with notes of dried fruit, spice and nuts, yet still fresh.
The wine is then decanted into standard bottles and sold. The label shows the vintage and usually the bottling date. Only a handful of houses make it, the best known being Niepoort.
In Portugal the word garrafeira also means an aged still wine from the best lots, so the two should not be confused. Garrafeira Port is a rare part of Portuguese wine and of the wider Port family.
