🥃 Cruzan Black Strap Rum
Cruzan black rum: an aged dark rum to which blackstrap molasses is added for colour and flavour; 40% ABV.
Cruzan Black Strap Rum is a black rum from the Cruzan brand. It differs from the other versions in that molasses is added to the finished rum. According to Difford's Guide, it is bottled at 40% ABV, and the label gives no age statement. The brand compares its taste with the old navy rums of the Virgin Islands.
According to the brand, the base is aged dark Cruzan rum, to which blackstrap molasses is added. It is the thickest, darkest molasses left after several cycles of extracting sugar from cane. Difford's Guide says that this is what gives the rum its colour and flavour. The brand describes the aroma as molasses and gingerbread, and the taste as rich and slightly sweet, with a note of liquorice.
Why this matters to you. Black Strap does not replace Cruzan Aged Dark Rum: its taste is much heavier and sweeter. The brand recommends it mainly for tropical cocktails. The WHO reminds: there is no safe amount of alcohol.
