📍 Drama

Drama is a wine zone in northern Greece, in eastern Macedonia, around the town of Drama at the foot of the Falakro mountains. It is one of the most modern Greek wine areas: many wineries were founded at the end of the 20th century and use new technology.

The vineyards lie at several hundred metres, and the climate is temperate continental: cool nights, warm days and snow in winter. Because of this the wines are fresh and keep their acidity. International grapes are widely grown: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, as well as the Greek Assyrtiko and Malagousia.

The local indication with a geographical name is Drama, and within the zone the separate name Agora stands out. Reds here are aromatic, with black berry notes, and whites are bright and floral.

Drama is part of the historic region of Macedonia (Greece), next to Kavala and Serres. If you know Greek wine from Santorini and Nemea, this zone shows another face of the country. Drama whites suit fish and Greek salads, and the reds lamb. The name Drama on a label shows that the grapes grew in this very area, which makes it easy to look for similar wines.
