📍 Amyntaio
Greece's coolest wine zone, by the lakes.
Amyntaio is a wine zone in northern Greece, in western Macedonia, near the town of Amyntaio in the Florina area, between lakes Vegoritida and Petron. It is part of Greek Macedonia and one of the coolest wine zones in the country. Vineyards lie at 600 to 700 metres, winters are harsh, summers moderately warm and autumn can be rainy.
The main grape is Xinomavro (“acid black”), a local red grape that also grows in Naoussa. In Amyntaio it makes reds with high acidity and tannin, with aromas of red berries, tomato and spice, able to age. The cool climate keeps the wines fresh and slender.
The zone is also known for rosé and sparkling rosé from Xinomavro: the Amyntaio appellation covers red, rosé and sparkling rosé wine. The sparkling wines are made by the traditional method, an unusual feature of the zone.
Amyntaio attracts visitors with its lakes, mountain roads and small wineries. Naoussa lies to the south, where the same Xinomavro gives fuller reds. Amyntaio suits anyone who likes fresh, acidic wines and serves them with roast meat, cured sausages and the cheeses of northern Greece.
