๐ Dukagjini (Metohija)
A fertile plain in the west with about 90% of the area's vineyards.
Dukagjini, or Metohija, is a fertile plain in western Kosovo. Most of the country's vineyards are here, so it is the main wine area of Kosovo. The plain lies between mountains, summers are hot and sunny, and winters are mild.
The centre of winemaking is the town of Rahovec (Orahovac), with Suhareka (Suva Reka), Prizren, Gjakova (ฤakovica) and Velika Hoฤa nearby. Both local and widely known varieties are grown: Vranac, Prokupac, Game, Dimyat and others. Reds make full-bodied wines, whites light and fresh ones. Many farms keep long-standing traditions, and part of the grapes still goes into table wine and rakia.
Dukagjini belongs to the wine of Kosovo. The label historic region means this is a traditional rather than an official wine division. Winegrowing here goes back to the Middle Ages. Today large companies and small family wineries work side by side.
