🍇 Prokupac
An old red grape of Serbia that gives light, spicy wines.
Prokupac is an old red grape from Serbia. It has been grown in the country for centuries and is considered one of the most important local varieties.
Prokupac wine is light to medium in body, with the aroma of red berries, plum and spice, soft tannin and medium acidity. Rosé is also made from it and is very popular in Serbia. Prokupac is sometimes blended with other red grapes, such as Cabernet.
Vineyards are in several areas: Župa, Šumadija, Belgrade, Oplenac, Three Moravas, Negotinska Krajina, Knjaževac, Niš, Aleksinac, Nišava, Toplica, Leskovac and Vranje. Mostly this is the south and centre of the country.
Prokupac is an example of an old variety coming back: after a time when it was nearly replaced by international varieties, winemakers began to make high-quality wines from it again.
