🍇 Fernão Pires

Grape variety ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 3 Updated:

Portugal's most widely grown white grape; it makes aromatic wines.

Fernão Pires is the most widely planted white grape in Portugal. It is grown in many parts of the country, but above all in the Tejo, Lisbon and Bairrada, where it is known by another name, Maria Gomes. It thrives where a productive and reliable variety is needed.

The main quality of Fernão Pires is aroma. The wine smells of flowers, orange zest, peach and a hint of Muscat. Acidity is moderate. So the dry white wines from it are light, bright and friendly, pleasant to drink young.

The grape is versatile. It makes not only still wines but also sparkling ones, especially in Bairrada, where sparkling wines by the classic method are popular. More serious aged wines exist too.

Its pedigree links the grape with Malvasia Fina. It belongs to Portuguese wine and to the general list of grape varieties. Fernão Pires shows that a popular grape need not be complicated: sometimes reliability and aroma matter more.
