📜 Grands-Échezeaux
A red Pinot Noir grand cru near Vosne-Romanée, next to Clos de Vougeot.
Grands-Échezeaux is a red grand cru wine from Burgundy in France. The vineyard lies next to the village of Vosne-Romanée, in the Côte de Nuits. It is one of the best sites in Burgundy. Next to it lies the Clos de Vougeot vineyard, and on the other side the famous sites of Vosne-Romanée.
The wine is made from Pinot Noir. The soil here is limestone and clay, and the slope is gentle. Grands-Échezeaux wines are usually elegant, smelling of red berries, violet, spices and forest floor, with fine tannins. In youth they can be reserved, and with years they open up and gain depth.
The appellation is protected (PDO) and is a grand cru, the highest step of the Burgundy classification. Grands-Échezeaux wines are expensive and valued by collectors. They are served with game, duck and soft cheeses. It is an example of the Burgundy approach, where the site matters more than the brand. The site is small, so few bottles come out each year.
