📍 Herzegovina
The country's Mediterranean south, with about 95% of its vineyards.
Herzegovina is a historical area in the south of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The climate is Mediterranean, hot and dry, so most of the country's vineyards are concentrated here. Soils are stony and limestone, and summers are long and sunny.
The main places are Mostar, Čitluk with Medjugorje, Ljubuški, Čapljina, Stolac and Trebinje. Local grapes are Žilavka and Blatina. Žilavka is white and gives a fresh, aromatic wine with notes of apple and herbs. Blatina is red and gives a soft, dark wine. Vranac, a dense red grape, and Trnjak also grow here.
Herzegovina is part of the wine of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Viticulture here is old, and many families make their own wine. Mostar Žilavka and red Blatina have become the region's calling cards. The wine goes well with local food: grilled meat, fish and cheese. So a trip to the region often includes tastings in family cellars.
