🍇 Žilavka
A white wine grape from Herzegovina, the main white grape of Mostar.
Žilavka is a white wine grape from Herzegovina, the main white variety of the city of Mostar. It is a local grape of Bosnia and Herzegovina and is thought to have grown on these lands for a long time. It is grown on stony limestone soils in a warm Mediterranean climate.
Wine from Žilavka is usually dry, with aromas of apple, pear and flowers and a note of almond. It is full-bodied, with moderate acidity, and often becomes more interesting with keeping. It is served chilled with fish, grilled meat and local cheeses. Alongside Žilavka in the same areas grows the red Blatina, which makes local red wines.
Žilavka is tied to the wine of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the region of Herzegovina and the city of Mostar. The best vineyards lie around Mostar, Čitluk (where Medjugorje is located), Ljubuški, Čapljina, Stolac and Trebinje. It is the main white face of Herzegovina.
