🥃 Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Rye
Jack Daniel’s line with a new mash: 70% rye, 18% corn, 12% malt; charcoal mellowing; 45% ABV.
Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Rye is a rye whiskey from the brand which, according to Difford’s Guide, appeared in 2017. The mash is 70% rye, 18% corn and 12% malted barley. It is bottled at 45% ABV (90 proof) with no age statement. It is a separate line with a different grain base from the brand’s classic expressions.
According to Difford’s, this is the first new mash for Jack Daniel’s since 1866. As with the rest of the range, the spirit is mellowed through sugar maple charcoal before maturation; Difford’s does not specify the type of barrel. According to the producer’s description, the profile is ripe fruit, toasted oak and spice. The producer suggests drinking it neat or in a Sazerac cocktail. Overall, it is an example of the same charcoal technology combined with a different grain.
Why it matters for you. Tennessee Rye is not a variant of Old No. 7: the different mash gives a spicier, drier style. The charcoal stage is what sets it apart from a general “rye” under US standards. Check the full name, because there are also Single Barrel Rye bottles. WHO reminds us: there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
