🥃 Jim Beam Devil's Cut
Jim Beam version: aged straight bourbon blended with liquid drawn from the barrel wood; 90 proof (45 % ABV).
Jim Beam Devil's Cut is a version of Jim Beam, which the producer calls an extra-aged bourbon blend: liquid drawn from the wood of the barrels is added to aged Kentucky straight bourbon. Its strength is 90 proof, that is 45 % ABV. The name plays on the 'angel's share', the whisky that evaporates during maturation.
During maturation part of the bourbon is absorbed into the charred staves. According to the producer, this liquid is extracted from the barrels and blended with the aged bourbon. SLTN wrote in 2012 that the base is six-year-old Jim Beam; EFTM, the same year, described its own extraction method. The company does not disclose the details of the process.
Why this matters to you. Compared with Jim Beam Original the taste here is oakier and smokier, and the strength is higher. If you want oak without the liquid from the staves, compare it with Jim Beam Double Oak. The word 'blend' on the label means a mixture of bourbons, not a flavoured drink. The WHO reminds us: there is no safe dose of alcohol.
