📜 Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro
A rich sparkling red Lambrusco from the hills south of Modena.
Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro is a sparkling red wine from the hills south of Modena, in the Emilia area of northern Italy. It is made from the Lambrusco Grasparossa grape. The name means red stalk: the stems of the bunch turn red. The vineyards lie on slopes near the town of Castelvetro.
It is one of the darkest and fullest types of Lambrusco. The wine has a deep colour with violet foam, high acidity and noticeable tannins, and smells of cherry and blackberry. Lambrusco can be dry or off-dry, more often lightly sparkling, known as frizzante, or fully sparkling. Rosé versions exist too.
Lambrusco pairs well with rich dishes of Emilian cuisine: cured meats, ham, meat-sauce pasta and Parmesan. Its fizz and acidity cut through fatty food. The appellation is protected as a PDO. For many people Lambrusco is a sweet drink from the past, but a good dry wine shows a quite different face of this grape.
