☕ Latte
Also known as: caffè latte
Espresso and plenty of milk.
A latte is a coffee drink made of espresso and a lot of hot milk. It can have a thin layer of foam on top. A latte has much more milk than a cappuccino. It is usually served in a tall glass of about 230 ml.
In Italian, the word “latte” simply means “milk”. The full name is “caffè latte”, meaning “coffee with milk”. If you ask for just a “latte” in Italy, you will get a glass of milk. Italians themselves drink milky coffees like this mostly at breakfast.
The modern latte appeared in the 20th century, after coffee machines got a steam wand in 1903. The wand heats and froths the milk. This makes microfoam, very tiny bubbles, and the milk becomes as smooth as velvet. If you pour this milk carefully into coffee, a pattern such as a heart appears on top. This is called latte art. Lattes are also often made with plant milk, for example oat milk.
